Row housing proposal survives public hearing

25-unit development planned for 1788 –1804 Upland Street
Prince George City Hall 3

A proposal to build as many as 25 units of stacked row housing at 1788 –1804 Upland Street was advanced to final reading following a public hearing before city council on Monday.

The project drew one letter of opposition with the writer saying a four-storey building is inappropriate for the area where the tallest buildings are currently three 2 1/2 storey apartment buildings.

Two more residents commented via telephone during the hearing.

One said he is "very much in support" of the project but noted a lack of sidewalks on the street and that the sidewalks on 17th Avenue so full of potholes that elderly people walk on the street instead.

"With a stroller, it's basically impossible to get to the old Save On Foods, which is five minutes from there," he said and added there is no connectivity to Duchess Park.

The other resident asked about measures to deal with the noise during construction and was assured that the work will remain subject to the City's noise bylaw.

The building is expected to generate about 11 more vehicles passing through a nearby alleyway.

Council voted unanimously in favour of advancing the item to final reading.

Daycare and a thrift shop

Two three-year temporary use permits were approved:

• To allow a daycare at Early Learning Preschool at 2588 Queensway Blvd. The number of children would remain at up 20 and still open at 9 a.m. but close at 5 p.m., up from 1 p.m.

• To open a Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop at 1655 Nicholson St.
