A group of second year nursing students at the College of New Caledonia are collecting flip flops for orphaned children ahead of their visit to India this month.
The students will be taking part in a five week clinical practicum at a hospital in the city of Bangalore. The students will be visiting orphanages weekly, including the House of Hope, a foster house for at-risk children. The students hope to collect 100 flip flops for the children before their departure on April 24.
According to Meghan McFee, a second year nursing student, working in another country will present a number of challenges.
"The biggest challenge will be trying to find out where our practice will fit into their healthcare system because it might be completely different," McFee said.
"Another big thing is just adapting our practice to theirs, but also trying to maintain our professional standards as well while we're over there."
McFee said the drive has so far gone well, and they have received donations of school supplies, colouring books, stickers, toys and Canadian souvenirs.
Fourteen nursing students will travel to India as part of the practicum - 11 from the Prince George campus, two from Quesnel, and one from Terrace.
