A plane landed safely Wednesday afternoon after it had to turn around and return to Prince George Airport.

Emergency personnel were called to the scene as a precaution, Prince George Airport Authority spokeswoman Robin Smith said.

She said the plane, an Air Canada flight to Vancouver, notified the airport at 3 p.m. it was returning as a non-emergency but requested standby as a precaution. It landed safely about a half-hour later.

Air Canada corporate communications manager Debra Williams said the flight crew experienced an issue with retraction of the landing gear shortly after departure.

"The crew subsequently returned to Prince George and landed safely and without incident," Williams said. "Fortunately, we have been able to secure an alternate aircraft to operate this flight."
