The Prince George RCMP serious crime unit is currently investigating a homicide.

RCMP said Travis Inias Basil, 26, was the victim and the incident occurred at a 2102 Upland St. home on Aug. 11 at 11 p.m. RCMP declined to provide further details Thursday other than to say the incident was reported to police on Aug. 11 and the investigation is ongoing.

Basil had an extensive criminal record and was last in the news in May 2015 when he was sentenced to 469 days in jail and one year probation for breaking into a home and stealing a motor vehicle.

The incident occurred in December 2014, a day after he had been released from jail after being in custody for about a month-and-a-half on a charge of breaching his probation. The sentence also applied to a July 2014 break and enter.

More recently, a warrant was issued for Basil's arrest on July 26 after he failed to make a first appearance in court on two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

It was the second homicide this year in Prince George. The first occurred on June 15 when a 30-year-old Prince George man was gunned down in the driveway of a home at the corner of Forest Avenue and Ospika Boulevard.

Police have not released the victim's name and no arrests have been made in that case.

A homicide is not necessarily a murder but is a death caused by the actions of others.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Prince George RCMP at 250-561-3300, or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be provided online at www.pgcrimestoppers.bc.ca, or by texting CRIMES using keyword “pgtips.”
