Convocation season continues this Friday, with the University of Northern B.C. launching the first of six ceremonies granting more than 700 credentials.

New president Daniel Weeks will kick off the university's 22nd convocation by way of his installation ceremony at the Northern Sport Centre.

The president typically receives the ceremonial robes at a stand-alone event, but Weeks chose to forgo the honour and instead deferred the event costs to student scholarships: 20 incoming academics will get leadership awards valued at $2,500 each.

Honorary degrees will be handed out to Xeni Gwet'in Chief Roger William and former UNBC President Dr. Charles Jago.

Ten faculty members will receive University Achievement Awards.

After the ceremony, First Nations professor Antonia Mills will retire with the title Professor Emerita.

The title is given to a faculty member "who has provided exceptional service to the university and the larger academic community through research and classroom teaching." In March, Mills was also handed the Paz Buttedahl Career Achievement Award from the Confederation of University Faculty Associations of British Columbia.
