At Saturday's 25th anniversary celebrations, the University of Northern B.C. welcomed Ryan Matheson as the Board of Governor's new chair.
Matheson is a UNBC graduate and will become the first alumni to take on the leadership role.
The board's business is nothing new to Matheson, who has served more than four years and as vice-chair since 2013.
"It is an honour to continue my involvement with UNBC and to become the first alumnus to be selected as the Chair of the Board of Governors," said Matheson in Saturday's press release.
He will lead the meetings for the 15-member group that oversees the university's finances.
"I am excited to be part of setting the direction of UNBC as we begin our next quarter century of delivering high-quality education," said Matheson, who has more than 20 years experience in the hospitality business.
Matheson is a manager at Hyatt Hotels Corporation and a partner with Matheson Resources, both positions based in Vancouver.
UNBC's president said Matheson will be a good fit.
"Ryan will provide outstanding leadership to the board of governors as the University charts its course for the future," said Daniel Weeks in the release. "As an alumnus, former UNBC employee, and successful entrepreneur, Ryan understands the important connection the university has with the region it serves."
Matheson replaces John Turner, who has served since 2012 and was also founding chair of the Northern Opportunities Initiative.
Matheson will chair his first meeting Sept. 12 for the group which meets at least four times each year.
