UNBC has openings for children to fill up on summertime fun and fill up their brains too.
Active Minds is a summer camp divided into two age brackets (six to nine years and 10-plus years) and several categories of interest. General science, green energy, healthy living, computers and theatre are all available, plus more, all led by UNBC's in-house mentorship. Their motto for the summer is "Hands On, Minds On, Let's Play."
Active Minds co-ordinator Seamus Hogan said the day-sessions were tailored "for the child interested in a career in science where they look at the science and technology in the present and the technology of the future" but would also appeal to kids' sense of fun. It's all a matter of selecting the week or weeks that best fit the interests of the bright young mind in your home.
"The eco-science weeks will be exploring the environment around us and using green energy," Hogan said. "For active children, there are the Healthy Life camps that focus on what it means to live a healthy life. For the creative child there are the How to Engineer Everything camps that focus on design and construction of everything around us."
Computers The Talk camps focus on tech innovations while the Computers Can Walk camps focus on robotics and the Computers From Scratch camps look at programming.
There is science within the arts as well, so the theatre camps will probe the practicalities of creation and performance.
"Each theatre camp will allow students to explore the many parts involved in putting together a production, from the writing of a script to designing sets, costumes and lighting, to directing and performing in plays," Hogan said. "These camps are two weeks in length and will be capped off by the production and presentation of a play."
Registration is now open. The cost is about $200 per week regardless of topic. For registration and other questions, contact Hogan's team by email at [email protected], phone 250-960-5277, or visit their website at www.unbc.ca/active-minds.
