B.C. Liberal Party members have endorsed changing the party’s name to B.C. United.
Eighty per cent of members voted for the name change, B.C. Liberal leader Kevin Falcon said at a news conference Wednesday morning. About 8,100 members, or 20 per cent of the membership, voted over the three-day process.
The new name still needs to be endorsed by 75 per cent of the membership at a delegate convention.
“We will make sure we implement it when it makes sense for us,” said Falcon, adding one of the considerations is if or when the B.C. NDP will call an election, which could come prior to the fixed election date of Oct. 19, 2024.
“I have to be very careful about this,” said Falcon, “and we will be smart about when we make that decision.”
The name, he said, reflects members being “united by values, united by a determination to focus on results and outcomes.”
The party believes in a private-sector driven economy that generates revenues for government “so that we can fund first-class public health, education, and post-secondary services,” he said.
Falcon said he wants a “big tent party” that welcomes everyone.
