The Fort St. John Literacy Society met with Fort St. John city council on Monday to proclaim Jan. 21 to 28 Family Literacy Week, as Jan. 27 is annually observed as Family Literacy Day in B.C.
The proclaim request was penned by society executive director Jessica Kalman, sending a letter to city council in December. The theme of this year’s literacy week is “Let’s Have a Family Party” and encourages developing literacy skills while creating family bonds.
Kalman was accompanied by the society’s program coordinator, Taylor Mills, presenting the event to council together. It’s the 25th year that Family Literacy Week has been celebrated.
Scavenger hunts, a story walk hosted by the city at Fish Creek Community Park, a provincial photo contest, buddy reading, tours at the Tse’K’wa Cave in Charlie Lake, and more are planned as part of literacy week.
“This event has a focus on literacy activities that are part of play, so incorporating fun and learning into the same activity,” said Kalman. “Which often actually encourages more learning, because they’re having fun while they’re doing.”
The literacy society has been active as a non-profit since 1990, serving Fort St. John and the surrounding area.
The local credit union is also this year’s title sponsor for the event, and is titled the “North Peace Savings Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week”
