A group is organizing to stop a BC Housing project in Richmond that would provide 90 units of permanent supportive housing.

Sheldon Starrett, who has been a vocal opponent of the 40-unit temporary modular building on Alderbridge Way, appears to be spearheading the opposition.

The city received an application from BC Housing on June 24 for the six-storey building to be constructed on city-owned property at the corner of Sexsmith and Cambie roads.

The building will have 90 studio apartments and each will have a bathroom, kitchenette and combined living/sleeping area.

The building, which will be operated by Community Builders, will also have a kitchen and dining area, an indoor amenity space, shared laundry and bicycle parking.

Tenants will be single adults, including seniors, people with disabilities and others who need support, according to the City of Richmond.

Starrett is organizing a press conference on Wednesday to announce a rally that will be held to oppose the 90-unit building.

“Based on years of lived experience by those living next to the two current Temporary Modular Housing sites in Richmond, residents feel this project should be stopped completely, with the city needing to detail a more comprehensive strategy to deal with the negative consequences these sites cause on surrounding neighbourhood,” reads a press release from Starrett.

Starrett will be joined by Kevin Lai and strata representatives from neighbouring condos, Avanti and Fiorello.
