Dawson Creek Secondary School teacher and coach Eric Wolf met with mayor and council at their Dec. 11 meeting, expressing gratitude for the use of City of Dawson Creek facilities and the success of the 2023 ‘AAA’ Girls Provincial Volleyball Championships.
“It didn’t take them very long to put it together, thanks to the many of the city people helping out and then the school district staff was really instrumental in getting it together as well,” said Wolf of the collaboration between the city and School District 59.
The championships wrapped up on Dec. 3, and over 140 volunteers donated their time to run the event. The local ice rink was transformed into a temporary space to host games in Dawson Creek this year, creating three courts that could be used simultaneously.
15 teams competed from all over BC, including three teams from Prince George, and teams from Vancouver Island, Nelson, Vernon, and the Lower Mainland. The Dawson Creek Secondary School team started in 15th place, and came out in 11th.
“It was amazing to see and inspiring just to see the whole process down there,” said Mayor Darcy Dober. “But most importantly, to reward those young athletes for all their hard work.”
“Female volleyball has really taken off in Dawson Creek over the last 10 or 15 years. So, to be able to see something like that of magnitude down there, it was, I mean, for us that’s what it’s all about, is how do we inspire youth?” he added. “How do we make them passionate about our city, our community and that just hit everything.”
