Photos: Theatre Northwest brings hit Kim's Convenience to the local stage

A heart warming comedic drama about a Korean immigrant family running a corner store in Toronto

Theatre Northwest delivers a modern Canadian classic with Kim's Convenience, a heart warming comedic drama about a Korean immigrant family running a corner store in Toronto.

The play, written by Ins Choi, was a huge hit before becoming an award winning sitcom on CBC television in 2016 and running for five seasons.

Centred on the trials and tribulations of the Kim family as they operate a convenience store in Toronto's Regent Park neighbourhood, the play portrays how hard-working Appa, the patriarch, deals with a changing neighbourhood and the evolving values of his children.

Both directing the TNW production and playing Appa, a role he played in 2018 at Vancouver's Pacific Theatre, Vancouver actor James Yi is set to bring his experience with the character and insights playing Jimmy Young in the TV sitcom to the stage.

Opening Nov. 21 the play runs until Dec.18 with evening shows and weekend matinees.
