MONCTON, N.B. — A health authority in New Brunswick is reviewing the case of a patient who died in the Moncton Hospital's emergency department on Wednesday.

Dr. Serge Melanson, a spokesman for the Horizon Health Network, says the patient arrived with a "serious health concern" on Tuesday night.

Melanson confirmed in a statement Thursday the emergency department was in a "critical overcapacity state" at the time.

Even though the department was busy, Melanson said the patient was triaged appropriately as an "emergency priority" and was to be kept in the main waiting room until exam space was available.

Though the patient was being monitored by staff and some early testing was completed, the patient's condition quickly deteriorated.

They were brought to the resuscitation area but could not be revived.
