B.C.'s civilian-based police watchdog has opened an investigation into an incident in Prince George.

In a statement issued Monday, the Independent Investigations Office, said it is looking into an October 6 arrest in which a police dog was deployed after RCMP responded to a report of an altercation in which a firearm was allegedly displayed.

The suspect suffered bites from the dog while being taken into custody and, despite medical treatment at the time, the wounds worsened and he returned to hospital for additional treatment several days later, according to the IIO.

He reported the incident to the IIO on Oct. 27 and an investigation has begun, the IIO said.

The name of the suspect was not provided but the incident matches a report of a road rage incident for which Donald James Chromick, 54, has been charged with possessing a weapon, resisting arrest, careless use of a firearm and careless storage.

The IIO investigates incidents of police-involved serious injuries or deaths. If there is any, evidence of criminal wrongdoing is passed onto Crown counsel for charge approval.
