Speed skaters heat up the Prince George ice

Fierce competition at Kin 1 for BC provincial short track championships

The BC Short Track Championships were held at Kin 1 over the weekend with athletes from age 9 to adult competing for speed skating supremacy. 

The two-day event saw athletes from across the province going head to head in races from 200-1,000 metres to become provincial champions.

It was a weekend to remember for nine-year-old Lydia Van Der Meer of the host Prince George Blizzard Speed Skating Club. She shared the bronze medal when she tied for third in the Club 9 female overall standings after racing 400m and 800m events on Saturday and 200m and 1,000m events Sunday.

Reed Wylie of the Vanderhoof Clippers Speed Skating Club also won overall bronze competing in the Club 9 male class, while his clubmate Jesse Wu was eighth.

In other Blizzard club results, Robyn Barwise won the senior women’s class ahead of Niahm Mullen of Langley, the only other senior women’s skater, and Parissa Jones was all alone atop the junior women’s aggregate standings.

Club 9 female - Avery Walsh, fifth; Cara Knowles, sixth; Anna McIntosh, ninth.

Club 9 male – Benjamin Freylejer, fourth; Waylan Matte, sixth.

Club 10 female – Madelyn Bluemink, sixth; Skyler Van Kaauwen, eighth.,

Club 10 male – Henry Mullins, sixth; Tristan McDowall (Fort St. James Falcons), seventh.

Youth 11 female – Alanna Bluemink, eighth.

Youth 12 female – Kamea Hudyma, sixth.

Youth 13 female – Emily Walsh, ninth; Olivia Bluemink, 10th.

Youth 11 male – Caleb McIntosh, sixth.

Youth 13 male – Kohl Hooper (Vanderhoof), eighth.

NeoJunior female – Megan Vansickle , eighth.

NeoJunior male – Kayven Hooper (Vanderhoof), 12th.
