The Chevys, a three-piece rockabilly band, will drive the beat into Riley's in the Days Inn tonight at 9 p.m.
"I've been in many other bands but I wanted to do something different than dance bands and classic rock," said Tim Yule, member of the year-old band. "There is a huge acoustic component to this, with the standup bass and hollow-body guitar and even a really cool set of drums that fit the theme."
Rockabilly, isn't just a musical form, there are hair-dos and clothing, Yule added. In Europe there are rockabilly clubs, just like there are blues clubs or jazz clubs.
"And that's kinda fun," said Yule. "And I think that's the number one thing about rockabilly, I think it cuts across age groupings and I think it's a whole lotta fun and that's all there is to it, really."
The Chevys perform the golden age era music, including Buddy Holly, some early Elvis and people tend to forget the Stray Cats were big in the 80s, Yule added.
"And look at rockabilly today, there's Chris Isaak and other people like that," said Yule. "We do a lot of originals, too. We're looking at rockabilly as an experience, as opposed to just a couple of songs. And we try to keep things really authentic, with three people in the band and we keep it acoustic. We try to be as true as we can to the way you would've heard it way back when."
The Chevys will be at Riley's on Friday night at 9 p.m. and on Friday, Nov. 8 they will entertain during Friday Night Mics at Cafe Voltaire, Books & Co., 1685 Third Ave., at 8 p.m.
