If you're lucky, you might see a jig or a reel during the 42nd annual B.C. Old Time Fiddlers' Association weekend of events at the Pineview Recreational Centre, 6470 Bendixon Road.

You're sure to find your own toes tapping during the Daniel Lapp concert, the day-long fiddle contest and the pancake breakfast that will wind up the whole thing.

Friday night the Old Time Fiddlers will host Daniel Lapp, world-famous fiddler, best known for his faux-hawked appearance during the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

A group of young fiddlers from the local Old Time Fiddlers branch will open the show followed by Lapp's performance of traditional tunes.

Lapp's family history is steeped in musical tradition that includes the Prince George fiddlers who are proud to note they are Branch No. 1 of the B.C. Old Time Fiddlers with 135 members, said Beth Bressette, association secretary. The mandate of the club is to promote the art of old time fiddling, she added.

"We give back to the community by having youth and adult fiddlers go out to seniors homes almost on a weekly basis to entertain," said Bressette.

Saturday's event is an intense day of competition with three adult categories including, open for everyone, seniors for those 65 and over, and intermediate for those 18 to 64.

There is also children's categories including, little junior for children under nine, junior for children under 12, and youth for those under 17.

"It's really important to us to support our 17 youth members by assisting them to develop their fiddling skills and become comfortable on the stage," said Bressette.

Ordinarily the Prince George event is held in July and this year the Old Time Fiddlers thought they should host the event a bit earlier in the year.

"It's hard for the organizers to hold the event in July because everything is done by volunteers and so many people are wanting to go away in July," said Bressette.

The event is really well attended and so are the Old Time Fiddlers fiddle jams for all ages held every Thursday at the Elder Citizen Recreation Centre at 1692 Tenth Avenue. Bressette said they usually have between 40 and 60 people attend and she thought it was because it's a great environment to practice in and people aren't afraid to make mistakes because the environment is so friendly.

"There's more than 100 people expected at the contest from all over B.C. and Alberta," said Bressette.

After the full day of competition, there is a dance that follows a light supper.

The pancake breakfast begins at 8 a.m. Sunday.

Cost of the concert is $15. The contest entry is $5, light supper is $5. The dance entry is $10 and the pancake breakfast is $4.

Tickets are available at Northern Hardware or at the door.
