There are more than 1,500 volunteer hours of effort behind the Haunted Maze at the 4H Beef Barn at Exhibition Park just in time for Halloween.
“This is our way of giving back to our community,” Jim Lovell said. “We grew up here and there was always plenty to do when it came to Halloween fun and then there just wasn’t so we thought we’d fix that. We started with a maze in our backyard but the lineups were down the street and we knew we had to go bigger so here we are.”
The fright factor goes from kid-friendly to jump scares to all-out terror depending on the time of day you dare to dive into this year’s under-water themed maze.
The Haunted Maze 2022 is at Exhibition Park at the 4H Beef Barn, featuring Kids Days on Sunday, Oct. 23 and 30 from 1 to 4 p.m. and on Oct. 22, 28, 29, 31 what’s rated as a medium scare takes place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and then from 8 to 11 p.m. is the full scare so be sure to be prepared.
“The day-time maze is family-friendly and nothing is scary in it and the music playing is the Monster Mash,” Jim explained. Then the medium scare is filled with jump scares and then the full scare sees actors chasing people and grabbing ankles and things like that so there’s fun for everyone – it just depends on how scared you’d really like to get.”
Taking the giving back to the community up a notch, the group that includes five founders and another 20 people volunteering to support the effort asks for admission by donation of cash that will go to the Prince George Animal Rescue while non-perishable food items will go to St. Vincent de Paul Society.
“The most food we’ve donated is 15,000 pounds and usually we give between 11,000 and 12,000 pounds – and that’s a lot to haul over to them,” Lovell said. “We love everything about this event – giving back, the donations and seeing people’s reactions when they’ve gone through it – and it makes the volunteers happy to hear what a great experience people are having when they come through the maze.”
