Brian Majore, local Indigenous comedian, gets grant for $23,000 to make a documentary about comedians in Prince George.

Prince George Indigenous comedian Brian Majore hosts the Just Us Comedy Showcase Friday night at The Firm.

As part of a documentary called Other Voices, funded by Telus StoryHive, viewers will see comedians who are Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) share their stories about living in Prince George.

As part of the documentary, after the show audience members have the chance to offer their opinions on camera of what the comedians shared on stage.

“In the documentary there are sit down interviews and I follow the comedians around and it also follows us as we prepare for the Just Us Comedy Showcase this Friday,” Majore said. “It’s being billed as an all BIPOC comedian show and it culminates with the question will people come out to support an all BIPOC lineup of comedians.”

The show stars Brian Majore, Kylie Lewis Holt, Monita Ranu and Neelam Pahal, with a special guest MC.

“That’s why I’ve called the documentary Other Voices because we’ve heard from straight white males comedians all our lives and so we know what their lives are like, we’ve seen it documented on TV, so this is an opportunity to learn about the lived experiences of Other Voices.”

This is Majore’s first time creating a documentary and with help from his mentor, Denis Paquette, Majore is confident enough to make a switch in his career after 19 years in the comedy scene to documentary filmmaker.

The $20,000 funding comes from STORYHIVE which includes other supports like training, mentorship and distribution of the film on TELUS Optik TV in 2024, along with a top up of $3,000 from the Indigenous Screen Office and Creative BC.

The Just Us Comedy Showcase is at The Firm Lounge & Grill, 363 George St., on Friday night at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 and are available at https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/571009945117.
