Symphony ball will have Strauss sizzle

The Prince George Symphony Orchestra will celebrate their 40th anniversary with the Strauss Sizzle Symphony Ball Saturday night at the Civic Centre. "This is a celebration of a milestone," said Ruth Langner, general manager of the PGSO.

The Prince George Symphony Orchestra will celebrate their 40th anniversary with the Strauss Sizzle Symphony Ball Saturday night at the Civic Centre.

"This is a celebration of a milestone," said Ruth Langner, general manager of the PGSO.

The ball was held for years when it fell by the wayside after 1997 and then Langner said Dr. Albert Koehler, board member, along with an organizing committee, took on reviving the ball a couple of years ago and then passed the gala event back to the symphony in time for their 40th season.

The ball begins with a four-course gourmet meal and music will be provided by a full orchestra.

"There is a full 35 to 38 member complement coming to play," said Langner. "There will be a large dance floor to twirl and demonstrate all of your dance steps."

She also said that people who don't have a dance partner will be pleased to hear there will be an experienced dancer on hand for those ladies who wish attend the ball without a partner.

"This gentleman is looking forward to having his dance-card filled," said Langner, who wants everyone wishing to attend the gala to feel welcome to do so.

There will be a live auction as part of the evening's events with wine and art going to the highest bidder. Darrell Hubbell has generously donated a stunning $2,500 ring as a door prize to add some sparkle to the evening.

Les Dala, conductor of the orchestra, will be the master of ceremonies for the evening while Imant Raminsh, founding conductor of the symphony, will be featured during the evening's entertainment.

"I think that's kind of thrilling," said Langner.

The Strauss ball is named for Johann Strauss I and II, who were famous for their elegant waltzes and lively polkas, she added.
