Northern Health has issued a toxic drug alert for Prince George.

The health authority is warning the city about a substance being sold as GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) that has tested positive for fentanyl.

GHB, often used as a date-rape drug, has sedative effects that can incapacitate victims, making it difficult for them to resist sexual assault.

The drug is a colourless liquid and has been linked to increased sedation, confusion, and symptoms resembling opioid poisoning.

Northern Health is urging caution when using this substance in any form.

The health authority advises drug users to:

  • Get overdose prevention, recognition, and response training, and carry naloxone
  • Avoid using drugs alone. Make a plan and inform a trusted person who can call for help if needed
  • If using alone, use the Lifeguard or BeSafe app (available for free on the app store or on the Toward the Heart website) or call the National Overdose Response Service (NORS) at 1-888-688-6677
  • Know your tolerance. If you are unwell or have had a period of abstinence or reduced use, start with a much smaller dose
  • Avoid mixing drugs or combining them with alcohol, when possible
  • Test a small amount first. Start low and go slow
  • Use drugs at an Overdose Prevention Site (OPS) – see below for hours
  • Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately if someone overdoses

The alert expires on March 7.
