Prince George RCMP are applauding the athletes, spectators, coaches, and organizers of the 2022 BC Summer Games for hosting a safe and peaceful event over the weekend.
Police were called to six minor incidents directly related to the games, all of which were resolved peacefully, a statement issued by the RCMP on Tuesday said.
“We had very few complaints to police about incidents at the venues and everything was resolved peacefully when we did attend,” Prince George RCMP Supt. Shaun Write said. “From a policing perspective, this was a highly successful event for Prince George.”
Two of the incidents police were called to involved transient persons camping in venue locations and refusing to leave when asked.
Police also removed two intoxicated people from venues when they wouldn’t leave on their own. One person left peacefully in a taxi and the other was arrested from being drunk in a public place.
Police were also called after a piece of Summer Games equipment was stolen from a vehicle, and officers located the stolen equipment nearby.
Police were also called to keep the peace while games representatives met with angry parents and athletes after their team was disqualified, the RCMP said.
The Zone 4 Fraser River boys soccer team was disqualified for misconduct away from the pitch. The team’s Saturday morning game was cancelled and the team was sent home later that day.
“In addition to our regular compliment of frontline police officers and Downtown Safety Unit officers on duty during the weekend, we organized several additional patrols specific to the B.C. Summer Games, including police officers from our West Coast Marine Unit, who were present at Ness Lake,” RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jennifer Cooper said. “Police officers patrolled the venues on foot and on bike to ensure the games went smoothly and safely for everyone.”
