The legacy of Prince George hosting the 2022 BC Summer Games last year is about to help local sporting groups, teams and athletes make their athletic pursuits a little more affordable.
The local organizing committee unveiled a $175,000 legacy fund to be distributed this year to successful applicants.
“There’s typically a legacy generated (for host cities), what you never know is the size of it and we were really pleased given the generosity of our community partners that stepped forward with financial and in-kind contributions, along with some great work from the volunteers that we were able to generate a legacy in Prince George,” said 2022 BC Summer Games president Renee McCloskey.
The fund will provide seven grants of $10,000 each to Prince George sports organization and 10 grants of $2,200 to a team or athlete who meets the requirements for the program.
For sport organizations the money can be used to cover equipment expenses, insurance, event hosting costs, travel, or training for coaching and/or officials. For individuals/teams it can be used for training, travel, and equipment costs. The application deadline is Sept. 15.
Online forms are available through the BC Games Society website.
The 2022 Games brought close to 3,000 visitors to Prince George from July 21-24, including 2,200 athletes who competed in 18 sports.
Just over half of the $175,000 total will be made available to applicants.
McCloskey says a decision will be announced this fall about where the remainder of the legacy fund will be spent.
“We’re still firming up what the plans are for the remaining amount to ensure we’re making the best possible use and having the longest lasting impact with those dollars,” said McCloskey
