Advisories upgraded to flood watch for Upper Fraser, Nechako

Status for areas now stands at flood watch

The River Forecast Centre has upgraded its streamflow advisories to flood watch for the Upper Fraser and Nechako watersheds.

Flood watches are issued whenever river levels are rising and will approach or may break their banks. Flooding of areas adjacent to affected rivers may occur.

"Rapid snowmelt earlier in the week has contributed to increased runoff and rising flows through the region. Rainfall yesterday (Tuesday) covered much of the Upper Fraser watershed, with rainfall amounts in the 20-40 mm range observed in most areas," the RFC said in a bulletin issued Wednesday afternoon.

"Areas of forecast high flows include the Bowron River, McGregor River and Fraser River around McBride, Hansard, Shelley and through Prince George to South Fort George and further downstream to Quesnel."

In a bulletin issued Wedneday morning for the Nechako, the RFC said sharp increases in streamflow had been recorded at Vanderhoof and Isle Pierre and were expected to continue to rise on Thursday.

Status for the two areas had previously stood at high streamflow advisory, issued whenever minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

Flood warnings, issued whenever flooding has happened or looks imminent, remained in place for the Quesnel River at Quesnel and Likely.
