Prince George's oldest ongoing local event, the Annual Spring Clean Up, will return on April 25.

The event was cancelled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Recycling and Environmental Action Planning Society (REAPS) is organizing the city-wide clean up, and will hand out free bags and gloves to participants starting April 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at their 1950 Gorse St. office.

Volunteers are asked to stay two metres apart during the event, unless they are part of the same household.

The City of Prince George will be providing extra garbage bins for participants around the city. Hazardous waste, electronics, and yard and garden trimmings will not be accepted.

To register, or find a map of city garbage bin locations, go online to princegeorge.ca/SpringCleanUp.

According to city documents, the first civic clean up event was held in Prince George on April 25, 1918 – exactly 103 years before this year's event.

At a meeting of the city's Board of Health on April 16, 1918, Prince George Citizen owner and Mayor H.G. 'Harry' Perry and Alderman Kerr put forward a motion to hold a civic clean up event.
