What will happen in Prince George during a possible wildfire emergency?

To have your questions answered, you can attend a public open house on May 15 where the city will provide an update on the community wildfire protection plan.

The city has partnered with the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG) and other community partners to create the community wildfire protection plan which aims to help reduce the risk of wildfire in and around Prince George.

The event will also include a summary of the progress being made on the City’s Emergency Strategic Plan, which is a five-year strategy that aims to improve the City’s readiness for all foreseeable emergencies, including wildfires.

Representatives from the B.C. Wildfire Service and the RDFFG will also be participating.

During the event, residents can learn about multiple aspects of the Community Wildfire Protection Plan and Emergency Strategic Plan, including:

  • The risks to Prince George posed by wildfires.
  • How the risks from wildfires can and are being reduced.
  • How the City is preparing for possible wildfire emergencies.
  • FireSmart activities that individuals and homeowners can use to prepare for wildfire emergencies and reduce the risk for their homes and properties.

The city also recently released an evacuation map, which will help emergency officials communicate with residents should a local evacuation order or alert be issued.

The evacuation map is modelled off of the city’s garbage collection map, as many residents are already familiar with that.

A high-resolution copy is available for download on the City’s Emergency Response web page.

You can also subscribe to emergency alerts on the city’s website.

The city’s emergency response web page is also updated regularly with important information.

The open house takes place on the second floor of the Prince George Conference and Civic Centre on Wednesday, May 15, from 11 a.m until 8 p.m.

Officials will be giving presentations at 12 and 6 p.m.
