Commuters and drivers needing a break when travelling this summer can do so between two keys stops along Highway 16 west from Prince George.
Today (June 19), the B.C. government announced the completion of its $2.3-million rest-stop project between Vanderhoof and Burns Lake, known as the Savory Rest Area, which included widening the road by 420 metres, a left-hand turning lane, a washroom and several picnic tables for commercial and non-commercial vehicles.
“Rest stops play a key role in providing motorists with a place to pull over, to use the facilities, rest tired eyes or have a picnic while enjoying the beauty of the area,” says Burns Lake Mayor Dolores Funk as the rest stop is located roughly 45 km east of the Village.
“We welcome the addition of the Savory Rest Area to the Highway 16 network, and we would like to thank the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for its continued investment in and around Burns Lake.”
The Savory Rest Area is set to serve vehicles travelling west on Highway 16, while the Tintagel Rest Area serves those heading the other direction, 15 km east of Burns Lake.
There are now more than 170 ‘strategically located’ rest stops in B.C. with the addition of Savory.
“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the province’s transportation network has been critical to keeping supply chains open, and our commercial vehicle operators have been doing a great job delivering supplies,” said Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, in a news release.
“We want to do everything we can to make the drive along our networks safe, reliable and comfortable for drivers. This new rest area will provide a convenient and safe place for them to pull over to take a break from the road.”
