Tragedy from COVID-19 continues to strike Northern Health.
In a written statement this afternoon (Feb. 4), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said another 465 COVID-19 cases were recorded in the past 24 hours for a grand total of 69,245 since January last year.
Of those, Northern Health found 52 more infections for an updated authority total of 3,610.
As cases continue to see a slight drop, Northern Health has seen more deaths.
Five new deaths alone were revealed yesterday (Feb. 3) which brought the death toll to 85.
Staying in the region, the McLeod Lake Indian Band announced a lockdown this week after declaring a COVID-19 outbreak on IR #1, where three elders have been diagnosed with the virus.
Chief Harley Chingee says, in a letter, one of the elders is currently in ICU, one is being monitored at the hospital and a third is isolating at home.
The letter also says Elder Sheri Solonas passed away in the early hours of Tuesday (Feb. 2) due to COVID-19 complications.

"I offer my condolences to her family," Chingee said.
"In order to assist the Health Team, Emergency Management and the Administration, lockdown measures have been put in place to protect our community members. This includes the closure of the MLIB offices and TFF, in addition to a mandatory stay-at-home order. Please understand these measures are only in effect to protect us all and to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to our most vulnerable members in the community.
Chingee says he has already received requests for special exemptions and permission to leave the reserve.
"I cannot give this permission," he replied. "All of us need to comply with the rules."
If members have medical appointments that require leave, they are asked to contact Kim Harmison at 778-363-1227.
Chingee also issued a warning to members who are breaking conditions and protocols, saying they're risking the possibility of not being allowed back onto the reserve for the remainder of the lockdown and/or having distributions withheld.
Northern Health also revealed yesterday two more deaths took place at Jubilee Lodge in Prince George, which raises the death toll to 16.
No new cases have been detected at the long-term care home; a total of 62 cases among 48 residents and 14 staff members remains since Jan. 13.
The outbreak was originally declared at the facility on Dec. 12, 2020.
Additionally, a ninth death has taken place involving the ongoing outbreak at University Hospital of Northern BC's (UHNBC) Internal Medicine Unit.
In an update on Jan. 25, Northern Health said the death toll had risen to eight since the outbreak was formally declared on Dec. 29.
As of this publication, there have been 33 cases detected in the unit among 21 patients and 12 staff.
Provincially, health officials announced another six deaths this afternoon which brings the new death toll to 1,240.
There are 4,447 people listed as active for COVID-19 in the province, 257 of whom are in hospital with 76 in critical care or ICU. A total of 62,078 _ have fully recovered.
Earlier this morning, Dr. Bonnie Henry and Minister of Education Jennifer Whiteside announced British Columbian students in middle and secondary schools and all K-12 staff are now required to wear non-medical masks while in class, with some exceptions.
While masks were previously required for students and staff in all "uncontrolled" indoor areas like hallways, the new rules require those in class to wear masks as well, even when they're with their own "learning groups."
But the new mask rules allow students and staff to take off their masks when seated at their desks or work stations, when there are additional physical barriers in place, or when people are eating and drinking.
Dr. Bonnie Henry said the updated rules align with the current rules in offices and restaurants.
All middle/secondary students, and K-12 staff will now be required to wear a mask in all indoor areas, except when:

Whiteside said the new rules will mean students will now need to wear masks when entering and leaving their classroom, during group work and when they get up from their desks to get a drink of water or walk around their class.
The new guidelines don't apply to elementary school students, and wearing a mask in those classrooms continues to be a choice for those younger students and their parents.
Whiteside said they also now recommend any high-intensity physical activity should be done outside when possible, and all shared equipment must be thoroughly cleaned between use.
Dr. Henry said schools continue to be a "low-risk setting," and they've seen "very little" spread of the virus within schools in the province.
Whiteside also announced the province will be using an additional $121.2 million in federal funding to help schools manage the enhanced safety measures and hire additional staff.
Whiteside said about 90 per cent of B.C. students are currently attending some sort of in-class learning across the province.
