B.C. Ringette Championships underway this weekend in Prince George

Almost 40 teams across several divisions have arrived in the northern capital

For those of you who’ve never tried, ringette is harder than it looks.

If you don’t believe us, you can check it yourself through this weekend as Prince George has kicked off the 2019 B.C. Ringette Provincial ‘A’ and ‘B’ Championships at the Kin and Elkscentres.

Almost 40 teams, consisting of 600 athletes, from across British Columbia are competing for their respective banners in either Under-12, Under-14, Under-16, Under-19, and 18-plus.

Ringette is a hockey-based, but you play with a bouncy ring (obviously), five players and a goaltender from each team is on the ice, you have to pass the ring over each blue line before starting an attack, and you only have 30 seconds to shoot it.

There are more rules that we haven’t explained, but the passion among the young boys and girls who participate is indescribable, and are looking forward to the possibility of winning a title on home ice.

Prince George has four teams entering the tournament via the Ringette Association.

This is the first time in five years the group has hosted an event of this caliber.

Provincials run from today (March 8) until Sunday (March 10) with game times ranging from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

For scores and updates, you can check the Prince George Ringette Association website.
