COVID-19 numbers are once again trending upward in B.C..
In a written statement this afternoon (Jan. 28), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said 546 more COVID-19 cases were recorded in the past 24 hours for a grand total of 66,265 since January last year.
Of those, Northern Health found 51 more infections for an updated authority total of 3,334.
B.C. health officials also announced 12 more virus-linked deaths, which brings the fatality rate to 1,184.
There are 4,455 people listed as active for COVID-19 in the province, 291 of whom are in hospital with 75 in critical care or ICU.

Yesterday (Jan. 27) marked the one-year anniversary of COVID-19 arriving in B.C., with Dr. Bonnie Henry stressing that residents need to follow guidelines and instructions while acknowledging she understands people are frustrated and tired.
“One year ago today, the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in our province," Henry said in a statement.
"Since that day, the impact has been severe; people have become seriously ill and died, our lives have been disrupted and health-care workers everywhere have faced challenges at a scale never experienced before.
“Let’s encourage those around us to do the right thing and show kindness and compassion to those who appear not to be.
“As we have seen over the past year, one case can turn into thousands. But just as important, the effort we put into keeping ourselves and each other safe can also push our COVID-19 curve back down again.”
Premier John Horgan also said the province would crack down on those breaking rules and guidelines saying it'll 'come down on you like a ton of bricks.'
“If you are coming into British Columbia on non-essential travel … you better behave appropriately, better follow our public health guidelines or we'll come down on you like a ton of bricks,” he said during a news briefing in Victoria.
“For those who disregard the rules, we’re going to be taking steps to do what we can to make sure that they feel the pain of trying to get outside the box that all of us have been in.”
But Horgan would not commit to instituting tougher restrictions on interprovincial travellers, such as a 14-day quarantine like the one Manitoba has just instituted.
In the north, the latest Geographic Distribution of COVID-19 by Local Health Area of Case Residence numbers released by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) on Wednesday show Prince George recorded 46 cases from Jan. 17-23, 2021.
From Jan. 10 to 16, the city and its surrounding region recorded 76 cases.
Peach River North recorded 31, while Peace River South added 13 cases and Nechako with an additional 12 infections.
Between the four areas, there were 102 cases in the same timeframe.
Also in the north, for the first time in 10 days, a Prince George school is being alerted for potential COVID-19 exposure.
Today, Henry also stressed the need for people to avoid all non-essential travel, despite Horgan saying yesterday (Jan. 27) the province would not be taking any action to restrict others coming to B.C.
“In recent weeks, we have seen an increase in community clusters and exposures in businesses, and we remind business owners now is not the time to let things slip," Henry stated this afternoon (Jan. 28).
"WorkSafeBC and environmental health teams have stepped up inspections and will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of communities, including shutting a business if required.
“The ongoing risks and challenges that have come with this pandemic have put a strain on all of us.
"While much focus is on our physical health, it is equally important to take care of our mental and emotional well-being. In particular, let’s ensure we connect our friends and family – young and old – who may be struggling, to let them know they are not alone and support is available."
Northern Health says Heritage Elementary School students and staff may have come into contact with someone who tested positive for the virus from Jan. 20-22, 2021.
This is the first known exposure for the School District 57 (SD57) member.
Since students returned to the classroom in September last year, 19 Prince George-based institutions have been marked for the virus, 16 within SD57.
Northern Health's school-exposure section explains students should still go to school "if you do not receive a phone call or letter from Public Health," but you're also encouraged to monitor symptoms daily.
- Contact tracing is initiated to determine how the individual was infected and who they were in close contact with
- We identify and notify close contacts who may be at an increased risk, and advise them to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms for 14 days
- Only Public Health can determine who is a close contact
- Learning groups, friends or other connections may not be determined to be a close contact
- Public Health staff works closely with the school and school district throughout the case and contact management process to maintain close communication with the school community
