BC Transplant marks milestone with Operation Popcorn

BC Transplant will deliver 150 boxes of popcorn to health-care teams across 28 sites in BC

BC Transplant marked 11,000 organ transplants in B.C. during its annual Operation Popcorn campaign at Prince George's University Hospital of Northern BC Tuesday, Dec. 3.

It was one of several stops the organization made around the province, delivering 150 boxes of popcorn and chocolate to health-care teams in intensive care units, emergency departments, operating rooms, transplant units, transplant clinics and transplant pharmacies across 28 sites.

Volunteers from BC Transplant, including transplant recipients, living donors and families of deceased donors, thanked the health-care professionals at UHNBC that make organ donation and transplant possible while sharing stories of how transplants have changed their lives.

Rick and Doreen Woodford lost their 34-year-old son Matthew in 2018 and decided the best way to make the loss more positive was to donate his healthy organs. Donating four of his organs, the couple said they are proud and happy that his loss can help people in need.

BC Transplant reported that 1,604,490 BC residents have registered their organ donation decision in the BC Organ Donor Registry.

There are currently 635 people in BC waiting for a transplant and there are 6,290 transplant survivors.
