BCHL’s Player of the Week goes to Prince George's Corey Cunningham

A big weekend for a local hockey player on the Spruce Kings has received league recognition.

Prince George’s own Corey Cunningham has been named the B.C. Hockey League’s (BCHL) Player of the Week ending Sunday (March 31) after putting on an impressive performance in the first two games of the Coastal Conference Championship.

The 17-year-old scored three goals and added an assist over the weekend at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA), which included lighting the Game Two-winning lamp that lifted the ‘Kings to a 2-0 series lead on the Victoria Grizzlies.

He earned the game’s first star on Saturday (March 30) and was the third star in Game One on Friday (March 29); both ended in 4-2 wins for Prince George.

Cunningham has turned heads in just his second BCHL season.

Thus far, he’s almost matched his regular season stats in the playoffs, recording eight points in 11 games, four goals and four assists, a year after not getting on the board in 2018.

During the 2018-19 campaign, he notched 14 points in 47 games, eight goals and six assists.

The Spruce Kings are in Victoria tonight for Game Three of the Conference Finals; puck-drop goes for 7 p.m.

Game Four is tomorrow (April 2) from the Q-Centre with another 7 p.m. start time.
