B.C. Forests Minister Pat Bell has sent a message to the silviculture community: You want to see a boost in investment, become involved in setting policy on carbon offsetting.
Creating the right policy framework for a cap-and-trade system for carbon and the rules around carbon offsetting - viewed as a means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions blamed for climate change - could create a long-term sustainable model for forest-based activities, Bell told the Western Silviculture Contractors' Association at their annual conference held recently in Prince George.
Bell believes there is a very important public debate underway now on how to treat carbon in trees and forests, and stand management. For example, if credit is given for an increase in tree growth from enhanced silviculture, that could significantly enhance the potential return from growing forests.
