Families in Prince George will get a leg up when sending their kids to camp and other programs at the YMCA thanks to a local fundraiser.
The Prince George Family YMCA hosts an annual Megathan, which raises money for the Strong Kids Campaign that subsidizes programs for kids who could not otherwise afford them.
“One in every five children and families that come into our buildings and programs is financially subsidized as we believe that health is a right and not a privileged,” says Amanda Alexander, YMCA of Northern BC CEO.
Alexander says one out of every four campers is subsidized as well as students who attend the Beyond the Bell program that provides after school homework support.
“All of that great programing helps to build healthy communities,” says Alexander.
The YMCA's goal is to raise $10,000 from the Mar. 9th Megathon event for its Strong Kids Campaign, with an annual goal of $60,000 by Aug. 31st.
Prizes will also be awarded to the teams with the best costume, the team that raises the most funds, and the team that reaches the most kilometres on the cycling or treadmill portion of the Megathon.
John Brink, form the Brink Group of Companies, has signed on as title sponsor of the fundraiser, kicking it off with a $3,000 donation.
“For The Brink it’s a special event because this particular program helps underprivileged kids participate in programs at the Y as well as summer camp,” says Brink. “Our goal is to work with the YMCA team to continue setting records with the annual fundraisers as well as the participation in this particular Megathon.”
