Boy suffers head and leg injuries

A nine-year-old Prince George boy suffered a broken leg and head injuries Oct. 23 when he was struck by a vehicle while crossing Fifth Avenue with his parents.

Marie Berger, mother of Marshall, told The Citizen the boy received two broken bones in his knee and injuries to his head when he was struck and thrown as the family crossed on the cross walk between Nicholson and Ogilvie streets.

"Marshall has nine staples in the back of his head and had surgery Sunday to put a plate in his leg," she said.

RCMP say when the driver of a brown van struck the boy "the impact threw the boy quite a distance and BC ambulance was required at the scene."

"The driver of the van was quite shaken up and very apologetic. He was issued a violation ticket under the Motor Vehicle Act for failing to yield to a pedestrian."

RCMP are reminding pedestrians and motorists to look out for each other.

"Pedestrians should make eye contact with all motorists around them and cross only at a marked cross walk or intersection once traffic has come to a complete stop. Motorists need to be aware of their surroundings and be cognizant of pedestrians when arriving at any crosswalk or intersection," said Cst. Lesley Smith, media relations officer.
