Prince George Transit is proclaiming its New Year's resolution early with an expanded service on some city routes.

Starting Jan. 2, some routes will start earlier and operate later.

"This initiative will allow us to better serve the citizens who utilize our transit service," said Mayor Dan Rogers. "Working with BC Transit, our goal is continuously examine our operations to find better solutions for the public, and we feel this will create better connectivity within our city."

BC Transit CEO Manuel Achadinha said growing customers demands in Prince George justify the expansion.

"(The expansion) allows BC Transit to improve the way we link communities, businesses, and support lifestyles," he said.

BC Transit and the City of Prince George jointly fund the bus system in the northern capital. Municipal staff and councillors make the final decision on fares, schedules and other aspects of the service.

Morning or evening service has been expanded on the following routes:

- No. 1 Heritage: one extra trip weekday evenings, last bus leaving at 10:17 p.m.

- No. 11 Heritage: one extra trip weekday mornings, first bus leaving at 7 a.m.

- No. 5 Victoria / Fifth Avenue: one extra trip weekday mornings, last bus leaving at 7 a.m. Also one extra trip weekday evenings, last bus leaving at 10:14 p.m.

- No. 55 Fifth Avenue / Victoria: one extra trip weekday evenings.

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Shirley Bond said the expansion will improve the service's convenience.

The city also indicated there would be other minor changes in January to improve safety and efficiency.
