Canada Post deliveries resume after big storm

Delays still expected as city streets in residential areas remain unplowed.
Canada Post suspends mail delivery
Canada Post suspended mail delivery in Prince George on Thursday after a three-day storm buried the city in snow.

The cleanup continues after the biggest storm of the season brought three days of steady snow that swamped Prince George streets and Canada Post wants its customers to know they are doing their best to deal with the conditions on the ground and get the mail delivered.

After mail service was cancelled Thursday, Canada Post announced today it has upgraded from a red to  yellow alert, meaning employees are working today , a day after they were shut down by the snow.

“A yellow service alert means we are going to do our best to deliver, but there may be delays,” said Canada Post spokesperson Lisa Liu. “The safety of our employees is our number one priority.”

Most residential streets and sidewalks remain unplowed, with the Bowl area buried under 45 centimetres of new snow and residents of the Hart Highway and other outlying areas dealing with a 60 cm snowfall.

Liu is asking residents to do what they can to ease the job of letter carriers and delivery drivers trying to make their way through.

That means shoveling snow off walkways, driveways and around mailboxes, and if ice forms on those surfaces, using melting compounds and/or gritty material to make paths less slippery. Keep stairs, handrails and the mailbox free of obstructions and in good repair.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says there’s 70 per cent chance of rain or wet snow today with a high of 1 C expected. Saturday will be even warmer under cloudy skies with a high of 6 C predicted and low at night of 2 C.

Sunday will bring a 40 per cent chance of rain showers during the day, increasing to 60 per cent in the evening, with a daytime high of 4 C, dropping to 0 C a night.

Above-average temperatures are in the forecast for Monday and Tuesday with highs of 5 C both days, dropping to 4 C Monday night and -9 C Tuesday night. Wednesday promises to be slightly cooler, with a high of 0 C and a lo of -9 C.

Normal temperatures for this time of year are -3 C for the high and -11 C for the low.
