Residents of the small town of Wells, located outside Barkerville, will have choices on the ballot when they go to the polls on Feb. 5 to elect a new mayor and three new councillors to the District of Wells council.

The byelection was prompted by the resignation of Mayor Gabe Fourchalk and three of the district’s four councillors in October and November. On Dec. 28, only three days before the end of the nomination period on Dec. 31, no candidates had come forward to fill the three vacant seats on council.

In the final days of the nomination period, six candidates came forward to run for the three seats on council. Jennifer Lewis, John Trotter-Wanner, Shannon McDonagh, Tyler Doerksen, John Aitken and Dorothea Funk are running in the byelection for council, according to an official Declaration of Candidates issued by the District of Wells chief electoral offifcer.

Former District of Wells councillor Jordan Rohatynski and former Barkerville CEO and Quesnel city councillor Ed Coleman are running for mayor.
Those elected will hold office until the province-wide municipal election on Oct. 15.
