In the midst of raising over $1,500 for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Prince George branch this weekend, the Cariboo Cougars salvaged losing that Pink in the Rink Game with a three-goal win the next day.
The Major Midget club let seven goals get by them on Saturday (Oct. 19), including four in the second period, which vaulted the Vancouver North East Chiefs to hand Cariboo a 7-3 loss.
The next day (Oct. 20), the Cougars retaliated quickly on offense with three first-period goals en route to a 4-1 win, improving their record to 6-1-0-1 and a fourth-place ranking through the first eight games of the 2019-20 season.
Carter Yarish even completed a hat-trick in that Sunday showdown and the 16-year-old finished with five points between the two contests (four goals, one assist).
“He’s been good for us,” said Cariboo Head Coach Tyler Brough in a team release. “He’s made the transition (to the league). He’s happy to be home, he’s buying into our systems and he’s getting rewarded for it. I thought he was one of the guys who stood out for us (Saturday) night in a pretty poor effort across the board I thought. But for him to get rewarded today for putting in the effort in both games, it really paid off and it’s good to see.”

Hunter Brown had himself a four-point weekend with a goal and three assists, two of which came on Yarish’s markers yesterday morning.
Goaltender Jordan Fairlie picked up the win by stopping 29 of 30 shots, but also let seven pucks get by him on 25 shots on Saturday.
“It’s different – you have to kind of adjust to each league,” said Fairlie, who is 3-1 with the Cougars so far. “It took a few days to kind of get used to this because I was used to the bigger guys. But it’s good. I like it here a lot. It’s a good place to come and develop.”
The Cougars are on the road to Richmond for a pair of games against the Greater Vancouver Canadians on Oct. 25 and 26, returning home the weekend of Nov. 2 for tilts with the currently undefeated Okanagan Rockets.
On Saturday, the Pink in the Rink 50/50 jackpot reached over $3,000 with the first $1,000 provided by Taba Enterprises Ltd.
Meanwhile, in one league beneath them, the Cariboo Minor Midget Cougars extended their winning streak to four games with a weekend sweep in Kamloops.
They charged back from a 3-1 deficit on Saturday against the Thompson Blazers with four third-period goals for the 5-3 win.
Amar Powar scored the game-winner with less than three minutes to go.
On Sunday, the Minor Midgets took care of yet another 3-1 deficit with three unanswered goals in the opening frame, ultimately earning a 6-4 win.
This Cariboo team also sits fourth in their league with a record of 4-2.
The Cougars are back at Kin Arena for a four-game homestand starting this week against Greater Vancouver.
