A public hearing for a proposed industrial development near the correctional centre originally scheduled for the Monday, Dec. 16 Prince George city council meeting has been cancelled due to the ongoing Canada Post strike.
On behalf of Eastway Sand & Gravel, L&M Engineering is looking to have the property at 880 Guay Rd. rezoned so that the former gravel pit can become the new home for Tyrod Industries, which is looking to expand its operations.
A public notice was put out by the city announcing the cancellation on Wednesday, Dec. 11.
“Local governments are required to mail or otherwise deliver notice of a public hearing regarding land use bylaws at least 10 days before the hearing,” the notice stated.
“Due to the Canada Post strike, the city has used alternative methods of delivery. However, we have been unable to confirm the delivery of the notices. As a result, to ensure procedural fairness, we have cancelled the public hearing scheduled for Dec.16, 2024.”
Should the public hearing be rescheduled, notice will be issued once again.
Since Nov. 15, members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers have been on strike across the country.
On Wednesday, Dec. 11, The Canadian Press reported that Canada Post said workers’ most recent demands would cost the Crown corporation more than $4 billion over the next four years at a time where it is struggling financially.
The union rebutted by saying its most recent proposal included lower wage demands than it had previously requested.
