Prince George RCMP Supt. Eric Stubbs is moving on, city hall confirmed Thursday.

Stubbs, who has held the top job at the detachment for nearly three years, will head to RCMP headquarters in Ottawa where he will be the director general of national criminal operations.

In a statement, Mayor Shari Green thanked Stubbs for his hard work and leadership and cited efforts to reduce domestic violence, creating a downtown enforcement unity and his role on the Mayor's Task Force on Crime among his contributions.

"I wish him much success in his next role with the RCMP," Green said.

A drop in the level of violent crime over Stubbs' tenure was also noted. Over that time, the city's score in the Statistics Canada crime severity index had dropped by 15.5 per cent. And for crime in general, the score was down 15.7 per cent thanks to marked drops in break and enters, assaults and robberies as well as in the number of murders.

In January, B.C. Justice Minister Susan Anton presented the city with an award for community safety and crime prevention.

Stubbs called his last three years the most challenging and rewarding of his career.

"I'm extremely proud of the members and staff who work in this detachment," Stubbs said in the statement.

"They work so hard to make this community a safe place and have been relentless in targeting prolific offenders and driving down crime in Prince George."

When he will be leaving depends on when he can sell his home, Stubbs said. Prior to coming to Prince George, he was the officer in charge at the Terrace RCMP detachment.
