No work is being done on the massive sinkhole at the intersection of Winnipeg and Carney Street.

With a gaping hole still in the road at the corner of Winnipeg and Carney, the city said the cause of the recurring sinkhole is still under investigation.

City crews excavated about five metres down to expose the top of a large oval storm-water pipe which is three by four metres in size. The city said the pipe was most likely installed in the late '60s and collects run off from manholes that is then discharged into the channel in Carrie Jane Gray Park that finds its way through the Hudson's Bay Wetland, goes underneath Queensway and into the Fraser River.

Engineering and public works staff have their suspicions that where the pipe meets a manhole has failed, it was stated in an email response to inquiries about the status of the work being done to close the sinkhole.

In the meantime the excavated area has filled with water, making it impossible to expose the whole pipe to discover the source of the problem.

"The City is exploring options for de-watering the excavation and the pipe so that crews will be able to see both inside and around the pipe to determine where it may be failing," Rob Ban Adrichem, director, external relations, concluded in his email response.

No completion date has been set.
