City preps new gravel storage site

The new site comes a year after someone took all the gravel from 3rd and London to use at Moccasin Flats

Nearly a year after a load of gravel went missing from a city property - eventually leading to a heated city council debate and a fair amount of community interest -  the City of Prince George is taking steps to relocate its temporary emergency gravel supply.

Crews were at work Thursday, Aug. 15, levelling a vacant city-owned property on the south side of 1st Avenue near the intersection with Carney Street.

Eventually, the city will store gravel there so it can be easily accessed in cases where it's needed quickly.

The city used to keep its gravel near the corner of 3rd Avenue and London Street. In September 2023, a private citizen took that gravel and used it to level out the terrain at the adjacent Moccasin Flats encampment on Patricia Boulevard. That property is also owned by the city.

The case of the missing gravel had the city concerned, as nobody had given the OK for the gravel to be moved. Police were notified, but in the end there were no charges laid over its unauthorized relocation.
