A sign that spring is coming to Prince George: Clocks move ahead on Sunday

Winter's been a breeze compared to previous two years, spring arrives March 20

The sun rises over Prince George early one February morning. Clocks move ahead on Sunday, March 9.

Spring is just around the corner.

How do we know that? Well, one of the signs is daylight saving time kicks in this Sunday morning at 2 a.m., when clocks get moved forward one hour.

That means one hour less to sleep in, but the days are getting longer and the time change means mornings will be brighter.

The clocks will stay on daylight saving time until Nov. 2.

That little skiff of snow that fell on Prince George Wednesday morning is not a sign winter is going to linger in the city but it does mean snow conditions at the ski hills around town (Hart Highlands and Otway Nordic Centre) will be a little bit better.

Despite that long stretch of February when the mercury plummeted and daily lows hit -15 C or colder for the first 17 days of the month and there were 10 days in the minus-20s, this has been a rather mild winter.

For perspective, Prince George was hit with temperatures in the minus-40s in each of the two previous winters.

The coldest day so far in winter was on Feb. 5 when it dropped to -26.5 C, as recorded at Environment Canada’s weather station at Massey Drive and Ospika Boulevard. February went out like a lamb with above-freezing daily highs for the last nine days of the month and that’s continued in March.

We’re in for a cloudy day today with a high of 6 C and a 60 per cent chance of rain showers, dropping to -6 C overnight under clearing skies.

Sunshine is in the forecast for Thursday with a high of 9 C but there will be a 20-kilometre per hour breeze in the morning that will drop the wind chill to -12 C.

More showers, rain of snow, are predicted for Friday with a high of 9 C and low of 3 C. The weekend will be cloudy with a high of 7 C on Saturday and periods of rain at night and more rain in store for Sunday with a high of 4C.

A mix of sun and cloud in forecast for Monday and Tuesday with a high of 5 C each day.

We're still two weeks away from the official arrival of spring. The vernal equinox in Prince George happens at 2:01 a.m. on Thursday, March 20.
