The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Northern BC branch is calling on the community to support its Gift of Hope program.
The initiative aims to provide essential items and gifts to people in need, particularly those facing challenges related to mental health, poverty and social isolation.
“For many in our community, the holidays are a reminder of what’s missing — family, security, and comfort,” stated Elaine Laberge, executive director of CMHA Northern BC, in a press release. “The Gift of Hope program is about more than just gifts — it’s a message that says, ‘You matter, and you are not alone.’”
The program, which has supported hundreds of local individuals and families since its inception in 2000, relies on donations of new, unwrapped items, including:
- Warm clothing (hats, scarves, gloves)
- Socks
- Men’s underwear
- Blankets
- Personal care items (shampoo, soap, toothpaste)
- Small gifts (books, puzzles, journals)
- Gift cards (grocery stores, coffee shops)
These donations will help provide comfort and joy to those who may otherwise experience a difficult and lonely holiday season. However, time is running short — donations must be received by Dec. 19 to ensure they are distributed in time for the holidays.
Donations can be dropped off at the CMHA Northern BC office at 1152 3rd Ave., Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Financial contributions are also welcome and can be made online at www.northernbc.cmha.ca.
“The impact of your donation goes beyond the material,” Laberge stated. “When you give, you’re providing someone with a moment of joy and a reminder that they are seen, cared for, and valued.”
