Students of the trades will soon be more equipped for their respective industries, which includes pipeline development and construction already underway in northern B.C.
Coastal GasLink (CGL), for a second time, has made a major financial endowment towards the College of New Caledonia (CNC), this time in the amount of $150,000 to allow Prince George-based students to expand on their skills and knowledge currently needed across various sectors.
The money is earmarked for bursaries between $750 and $1,000 and will be open for CNC students in trades and technology programs like heavy mechanical, welding, metal fabrication, power engineering, electrical, carpentry and professional cook.
CGL says all of the qualifying fields align with its construction and operational needs.
“Coastal GasLink is aiming to leave a legacy of skills development with our project,” said CGL Public Affairs Manager Kiel Giddens in a statement on Monday (Nov. 9).
“We’ve been investing in skills development and long-term education programs to support Indigenous and local residents since project planning started and we are proud to partner again with the College of New Caledonia.”
Funds will also go towards in industry certification courses, which, in 2021, will be known as Coastal Gaslink Safety Training Week, along with new trades equipment for CNC.
Both investments will be applied at campuses in Prince George, Mackenzie, Vanderhoof, Fort St. James and Burns Lake.
“The numerous ways in which Coastal GasLink’s generous donations have, and will continue to, benefit trades students across most of the region CNC serves are quite significant,” said CNC President Dr. Dennis Johnson.
“We’re thankful to Coastal GasLink for its continued support and investment in northern B.C.’s next generation of skilled trade workers.”

In March 2015, CGL donated $250,000 to CNC for its Digital Delivery Instruction expansion, student awards and a safety training week.
