College Heights Secondary School is grieving the sudden death of a student.

In a letter sent to parents and students on Oct. 5, the school announced they are doing everything they can to support students and staff in the aftermath of the news.

"We have asked for the assistance of the District and School's Critical Events Response Team (CERT) to help our school deal with this loss," the letter says. "The death of an individual in our school community is always difficult to cope with and hard to accept. In the days or weeks to come, you may anticipate more questions at home from your son or daughter and find he or she may need to talk about this sudden loss."

The school will remain open, principal Randy Halpape says. School and district support staff will be on hand throughout next week as required.

"We do ask that our school community respect the privacy of the family during this difficult time and refrain from contacting the family, commenting and/or posting on social media," the letter reads.

If you do have any concerns about your child, the school says you can contact the following agencies:

  • Counsellors - CHSS - 250-964-4431
  • Administration - CHSS - 250-964-4431
  • Mental Health Services - 250-565-2668
  • Crisis Centre - 250-563-1214
  • Prince George Native Friendship Center - 250-564-3568
  • Intersect - 250-562-6639

There is also a list of resources for students as well as parents on the school website.

There are no other details being released at this time.

This is the second passing of a student in just under two weeks for the school. A similar letter was sent out on Sept. 26 informing staff and parents there had been a sudden passing.
