A one-year study analyzing the state of the rail system in Prince George is about to get underway.
The Resource Municipalities Coalition and Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT) jointly announced the study on Tuesday (Nov. 3), which will review rail services in Prince George, northwest B.C., northeast B.C. and the Cariboo-Chilcotin and Lillooet regions.
The two groups said the study will look at the current state of the rail system to meet existing demand, and identify future opportunities.
“Northern BC has tremendous opportunity for the First Nation communities and resource communities and those resources must be able to get to market,” said Fort St. John Mayor Lori Ackerman in a statement.
“I look forward to working together to determine the present base line condition, the opportunities and investment needs from source to port.”
HDR Inc. of Nebraska will conduct the study.
The release notes NDIT has committed $197,006 to the project through its Pine Beetle Recovery Account.
The coalition includes Fort St. John, Taylor, the Northern Rockies, Tumbler Ridge and Mackenzie.
