The B.C. Conservation Service says it has opened an investigation into an alleged shooting of a grizzly bear north of Quesnel.

In a posting on social media, the BCCOS said conservation officers located a dead grizzly and four suspects and seized three rifles after responding to a tip on Sunday evening.

"Hunting of black bear is permitted within open seasons in BC. There is no open season for grizzly bears anywhere in British Columbia," BCCOS said in reference to a ban on grizzly hunting that has been in place since 2017.

Names of the suspects were not released and charges remain pending.

In February, an Elk Valley man was fined $15,000 for killing a grizzly sow and cub.
