Costco and the neighbouring Husky gas station were made off limits for a time on Wednesday afternoon when Prince RCMP were called in to deal with a suspicious package.

RCMP were called to the scene off Highway 16 at Range Road at about 12:15 p.m. and the public was asked to avoid the area while cruisers were stationed at all entrances to the big box store where officers were denying customers entry.

A section of the Costco parking lot was closed to the Husky was cordoned off, putting about adozen vehicles behind police tape.

By about 3:15 p.m., RCMP were stepping back and the detachment sent out a tweet saying the matter had been resolved.

"There was a concern for the safety of persons in the building along with those in neighbouring businesses, therefore, the immediate area was evacuated," Prince George RCMP Cpl. Sonja Blom said in a statement. "Once it was confirmed that the package was not posing a risk to public safety, the businesses in the area were re-opened."

Other neighbouring businesses and the Pine Valley Golf Centre remained unaffected.
